Lean Software Development
Busy isn't the same as valuable. Make the difference visible.
It's easy for a team to confuse activity with progress. This course gives developers, technical leaders, and teams a practical lens for telling the difference — integrating lean principles with agile engineering practices to cut waste, build quality in from the start, and get to a sustainable pace that actually ships better software faster.
Streamline software development, reduce waste, and deliver value faster with Lean principles, boosting customer satisfaction and your competitive edge. Learn practical strategies to optimize workflow and build higher quality software in this essential class for forward-thinking organizations.
Lean Software Development is an official Scrum Alliance microcredential in the Technical Literacy track. Attend both live sessions, participate, and it's yours — no exam, no follow-up assignment.

What you'll learn
The three pillars of lean delivery
Scrum Alliance's official curriculum for this microcredential, covering the mindset, the mechanics, and the people side of lean software development.
Module 01
Lean core concepts & principles
The core concepts underneath lean software development, and why each principle matters on its own before you try to apply them together.
Module 02
Eliminate waste
How lean and agile practices mitigate waste in traditional development, why building quality in beats fixing defects later, and what "deferring commitment" actually replaces.
Module 03
People, knowledge & kaizen
How creating knowledge and respecting people show up in practice, and how to measure improvement and plan the optimization work that follows.
Who it's for
Anyone accountable for how software gets built
Lean Software Development focuses on both the technical practices and the management approaches that support them — built for individual contributors and the leaders of software organizations alike.
Software developers
Wanting a sharper lens for telling valuable work from busywork, and the practices that build quality in from the start.
Scrum Masters & technical team managers
Looking for ways to surface hidden bottlenecks and systemic friction that standard velocity metrics miss.
Engineering managers & tech leads
Responsible for a sustainable delivery pace, and wanting a model that connects technical practice to organizational optimization.
Business analysts
Wanting to recognize waste and inefficiency in the requirements and handoff process, not just in code.
QA & testers
Learning where defects actually originate in the process, so quality gets built in rather than inspected in afterward.
Agile coaches for software orgs
Bringing a lean lens into organizations that already know Scrum but haven't yet connected it to reducing waste at the system level.
Straight answer on prerequisites: there are none, though some basic familiarity with Scrum is recommended. Programming skills aren't required — this course focuses on principles and practices anyone shaping how software gets built can apply.

Paul is an expert Agile Technical Coach dedicated to restoring the "engineering" in software engineering. With decades of hands-on experience in high-stakes development environments, he doesn't just teach theory — he focuses on the hard technical skills required to build maintainable, high-quality software. As a guide for thousands of developers worldwide, he bridges the gap between abstract Agile concepts and the daily reality of writing code, helping teams deliver value faster and with greater confidence.

Questions
Before you register
What is lean software development?
A set of practices, adapted from lean manufacturing, aimed at increasing efficiency and eliminating anything customers wouldn't perceive as adding value. The course is built around seven guiding principles: eliminate waste, build quality in, create knowledge, defer commitment, deliver fast, respect people, and optimize the whole.
Do I need a software development background?
No formal prerequisites, though some basic familiarity with Scrum is recommended. Programming skills aren't required — developers, managers, and leaders in software organizations all get value from the material.
Is there an exam?
No exam. Attend the live session and participate, and we register you for the Scrum Alliance Lean Software Development microcredential. Your digital badge follows shortly after.
How is the training structured?
One 5-hour live virtual session covering lean core concepts, eliminating waste, and the people-and-knowledge side of continuous improvement. It's interactive by design, so plan on cameras on and bring real examples of waste from your own workflow.
Does it count toward my certification renewal?
Yes — Scrum Alliance members earn 5 SEUs for this course, and it's also eligible for 5 PMI PDUs, both applicable toward your existing certification renewals. Your seat also includes a two-year Scrum Alliance membership.
Can you run this privately for my organization?
Yes, and for this course it's often the stronger choice — a private session lets your whole engineering org apply the lean lens to your actual value stream, together. Email hello@rocketninesolutions.com and we'll put together a plan.
Still deciding?
Ask us anything
Not sure whether this is the right level for your team? Describe your workflow and where you suspect the waste is hiding, and we'll give you a straight answer.
Run the session against your team's actual value stream and leave with a shared vocabulary for waste, flow, and quality — instead of a few scattered habits.
