Introduction to Agile Coaching

Every great coach
starts somewhere.

Coaching, facilitating, mentoring, and teaching aren't the same skill — and most agile practitioners are never taught the difference. This course lays the foundation: what agile coaching actually is, the presence it takes to hold space for a team, and the ethical line every coach has to learn to walk.

What you'll learn

The foundations every agile coach needs

Six areas that separate agile coaching from adjacent roles like facilitation, mentoring, and project management — plus a case study to work through together.

Module 01

What is agile coaching?

Define agile coaching and its core principles, and see how it's rooted in agile values, principles, and practices from the start.

Module 02

The agile coach

Tell coaching apart from facilitating, mentoring, teaching, and advising — and place the coach's role inside a real transformation.

Module 03

The agile coaching growth wheel

Use a practical self-assessment tool to map your current strengths across the different competencies agile coaching draws on.

Module 04

The coaching presence

Build the confident, grounded, neutral presence that makes a team feel safe enough to actually change — and learn to recognize progress out loud.

Module 05

Self-mastery

Develop the emotional intelligence, resilience, and self-care habits that keep a coaching practice sustainable.

Module 06

Ethical considerations

Work through the ethical dilemmas, conflicts of interest, and confidentiality questions agile coaches run into in real organizations.

Case study

A coaching challenge, worked end to end

The session closes on a real-world case study, applying everything from the six modules to a coach facing a fresh challenge a year into the work.

Who it's for

Anyone who guides a team, not just leads one

You don't need "coach" in your title to get value from this — you need people who look to you when things get hard.

Anyone drawn to coaching

If mentoring, facilitating, or guiding teams toward better ways of working already appeals to you, this is the entry point.

Product Owners & Scrum Masters

Add a coaching layer to a role you already know well, and start influencing outcomes beyond your own team.

Practitioners eyeing agile coaching

Test the fit before committing to a full coaching career, with a credential that stands on its own either way.

Managers & leaders

Working in complex environments where coaching behaviors matter as much as decisions and direction.

Anyone building resilient teams

Practical coaching skills for cultivating teams that adapt well, whatever your role is called.

Straight answer on prerequisites: there are none. Some familiarity with agile will help you follow along, but this course is designed as a true starting point.

Scott has spent 20 years in the industry, working as a practitioner, coach, and trainer across every stage of agile adoption — including the early, uncertain stretch where most coaches are made or lost.

Scott has trained 1000s of people, and teaches this course as the on-ramp he wishes more new coaches had — practical, honest about the hard parts, and grounded in real situations rather than theory alone.

Questions

Before you register

How does this fit with the other agile coaching microcredentials?

This is the starting point. Scrum Alliance's coaching microcredentials build naturally from here into Becoming an Agile Coach, Agile Coaching Skills, Coaching for Change, and Coaching for Transformation. They're not prerequisites for each other, but they're designed to click into place in that order — see the pathway below.

Do I need a coaching or agile background?

No. There are no prerequisites. Some familiarity with agile will help you follow the examples, but the course is built to work as a genuine introduction.

Is there an exam?

No exam. Attend the full live session and participate, and we register you for the Scrum Alliance Introduction to Agile Coaching microcredential. Your digital badge follows shortly after.

How is the session structured?

One 4-hour live virtual session working through the six modules, closing on a real-world case study. It's interactive by design, so plan on cameras on.

Does it count toward certification renewal?

Yes — Scrum Alliance members earn 4 SEUs and 4 PDUs for this course, which you can apply toward renewing your certifications. Your seat also includes a two-year Scrum Alliance membership.

Can you run this privately for my organization?

Yes — a private session lets Scott shape the examples around situations your team is actually facing. Email hello@rocketninesolutions.com and we'll put together a plan.
