One 4-hour live virtual session Scrum Alliance microcredential No prerequisites

Becoming an Agile Coach

Coaching isn't one move.
It's six.

Facilitating, teaching, mentoring, advising, leading, coaching — a good agile coach moves between all six constantly, and knowing which one the moment calls for is the actual skill. This course names each stance, shows you when to reach for it, and gives you the practice to shift between them on purpose instead of by instinct.

What you'll learn

The six stances of an agile coach

Facilitating, teaching, mentoring, advising, leading, and coaching — the moves that let you meet a team exactly where it is, plus a case study to bring it all together.

Module 01

Facilitating

Run conversations that lead to real, shared decisions — while staying neutral, transparent, and trusted enough for a group to actually open up.

Module 02

Teaching

Tell formal instruction apart from the informal, in-the-moment kind, and recognize which one a situation is actually asking for.

Module 03

Mentoring

Build a mentoring plan that fits both the person and the organization, and see where mentoring an individual differs from mentoring a group.

Module 04

Advising

Develop an advising mindset, share relevant experience without dictating the outcome, and build the trust that makes advice worth taking.

Module 05

Leading

Give a change a purpose people can rally around, and use storytelling and consistent example to build a culture of continuous learning.

Module 06

Coaching

Adopt a genuine coaching mindset, build the core skills a coaching conversation calls for, and see how coaching a team differs from coaching an individual.

Case study

A coaching challenge, worked end to end

The session closes on a real-world scenario, applying all six stances to a coach navigating a fresh challenge in an unfamiliar environment.

Who it's for

Anyone who wants more than one gear

You don't need "coach" in your title to benefit — you need moments where facilitating isn't enough and telling people what to do isn't either.

Anyone who wants to become an agile coach

A grounded, practical entry point into the role — what it actually asks of you day to day.

Leaders supporting agile adoption

The stances that let you guide adoption without just issuing direction from above.

Leaders looking to increase agile ROI

Sharper coaching moves so the investment your organization already made actually pays off.

Anyone sharpening their stances

Already facilitating or leading? Learn to name the shift and make it on purpose.

Scrum Masters

Ready to expand a coaching toolkit that's currently doing most of its work through facilitation alone.

Agilists & professionals

Growing their team-coaching abilities beyond whatever role they hold today.

Straight answer on prerequisites: there are none. Some familiarity with agile will help you follow along, but this course works whether you've run one retro or a hundred.

Scott Dunn

Founder, Rocket Nine Solutions · Certified Scrum Trainer

Scott has spent 20 years in the industry, working as a practitioner, coach, and trainer across every stage of agile adoption — including the early, uncertain stretch where most coaches are made or lost.

He's guided coaches and teams across 100s of organizations, from first-time Scrum Masters to seasoned leaders trying to name what "coaching" actually means for their role.

Scott has trained 1000s of people, and teaches this course as the practical follow-through he wishes more new coaches had — naming the stance you're in, on purpose, instead of defaulting to the one that's most comfortable.

Questions

Before you register

How does this build on Introduction to Agile Coaching?

It's the natural second step. Introduction to Agile Coaching lays the foundation — what coaching is and the presence it takes. This course goes further into the specific stances a coach moves through: facilitating, teaching, mentoring, advising, leading, and coaching. Neither is a strict prerequisite for the other, but they're designed to build in this order. From here the pathway continues into Agile Coaching Skills, Coaching for Change, and Coaching for Transformation — see the full pathway below.

Do I need a coaching or agile background?

No. There are no prerequisites, and this isn't only for people who already carry "coach" in their title — Scrum Masters and team leads get just as much out of it. Some familiarity with agile will help you follow the examples, but it's not required.

Is there an exam?

No exam. Attend the full live session and participate, and we register you for the Scrum Alliance Becoming an Agile Coach microcredential. Your digital badge follows shortly after.

How is the session structured?

One 4-hour live virtual session working through the six stances, closing on a real-world scenario. It's interactive by design, so plan on cameras on.

Does it count toward certification renewal?

Yes — each attendee earns 4 SEUs and 4 PDUs, applicable toward Scrum Alliance and PMI renewals. A two-year Scrum Alliance membership is also included per seat.

Can you run this privately for my organization?

Yes — a private session lets Scott shape the scenarios around situations your team is actually facing. Email hello@rocketninesolutions.com and we'll put together a plan.
