Anatomy of a Good AI Prompt: Part 1 — Beginner

In class, you saw the five-element framework for a strong AI prompt: Goal, Role, Context, Action, Format. If you’ve tried it once or twice since class and moved on, this post is for you — the goal here isn’t to introduce anything new, it’s to make sure the framework actually becomes a habit instead of something you remember exists but rarely reach for.

A Quick Refresher

Five questions make up a strong prompt: Goal (what are you trying to accomplish?), Role (who should the AI act as while answering?), Context (what does it need to know about your specific situation?), Action (what should it actually produce?), and Format (what shape should the output take?).

Here’s why this matters more than it sounds like it should: most people’s default prompt is really just the Action, stated vaguely — “help me with this sprint report” — with everything else left for the AI to guess. And it will guess. It just won’t guess your specific situation.

Before and After, From Real Work

Compare: “Write a user story for this feature” versus “Acting as a Product Owner writing for a development team new to this codebase, write a user story for a password reset feature, following the standard ‘As a… I want… so that…’ format, with three acceptance criteria.” The first produces something generic enough to apply to almost any product. The second produces something you could paste directly into your backlog.

The difference isn’t cleverness — it’s simply that the second prompt didn’t leave four of the five elements to chance.

Try This Right Now

Take a task you’d normally hand to AI with a one-line request — a status update, a meeting recap, a first draft of anything. Before you type it, jot down one sentence for each of the five elements: Goal, Role, Context, Action, Format. Then combine them into a single prompt and run it. Compare the result to what you’d normally get from your usual one-liner. You should notice the output needs less editing afterward — that reduction in cleanup work is the actual payoff of the framework, more than any single “better” response.

Keep This Handy
The five elements above are just the starting point. Our free Prompt Best Practices quick-reference pulls in the rest of what the framework covers — iteration, working with custom data, chaining prompts for complex tasks, and a fill-in template you can reuse on any task — with before-and-after examples across backlog refinement, sprint planning, and stakeholder updates.

Have a question, a use case you’re proud of, or a task you tried this on? We’d love to hear about it at the next Alumni Meetup — it’s one of the best places to trade real examples with other Product Owners working through the same challenges, and every session leaves you with at least one idea you didn’t walk in with.

A fill-in prompt template covering all five elements is available to AIPO class participants as part of the course materials, if you have taken an AIPO course with Rocket Nine Solutions and have misplaced the link to your Mural board with this information on it, please reach out via email at hello@rocketninesolutions.com.

A Note on How This Was Written: This post was developed collaboratively between Rocket Nine’s training team and Claude, Anthropic’s AI assistant — drawing on real material from our AI for Product Owners class and anonymized insights from the Product Owners who’ve taken it. We think that’s fitting: the same thoughtful human-AI collaboration we teach in class is exactly how we approached writing about it.
